SUOMEKSI (konekäännös) Pian tulee kuluneeksi 35 vuotta siitä, kun MICKE BJORKLOF & BLUE STRIP perustettiin 1990-luvun alussa, ja yhtyeen perustajaisän ja nimimiehen Micke Bjorklofin ohella basisti Seppo Nuolikoski on yhä mukana. Se olisi jo riittävä syy juhlaan, mutta sitten on vielä se, että Micke juhlii 60-vuotissyntymäpäiväänsä ja niinpä - anteliaita kuin suomalaiset ovat - hän lahjoittaa meille kaksi albumia. ”Outtakes"-levyllä hän tarjoilee meille ensin ”tähteiden" kierrätystä, ja kuten kaikki tiedämme, se maistuu usein erityisen hyvältä. Koska yhtyeen studioalbumeille äänitettiin yleensä enemmän kappaleita kuin levylle päätyi, tässä on yhdeksän kappaletta, jotka ovat peräisin viidestä eri albumisessiosta. ”Hylätyt” on tässä oikeastaan väärä sana, sillä ne eivät yksinkertaisesti sopineet tyylillisesti tai muista syistä. Siellä on todellinen lomatunnelma, kun nämä kaverit jakavat (soolo)pallot toisilleen ja groovaavat. Heal You vie meidät muutaman vuoden taaksepäin vuoden 2013 albumille ”After The Flood”, ja tämä swampblues hyötyy ennen kaikkea Micken erinomaisesta bluesharpusta. On todella hienoa, kun hän laukaisee huuliharppunsa. Puhumattakaan siitä, että numero on todellinen korvamato. Way To Go ei ole yhtään vähemmän tarttuvampi kantrivivahteineen ja kitaristi Lefty Leppäsen ajavine slide-salvosaleineen. Ja vieläpä räjäyttämättä soundia, vaan yksinkertaisesti näiden kavereiden soittotaidon kautta. Kyllä tässäkin ihmetellään, mikseivät nämä kappaleet päässeet levylle. Itse asiassa viimeisimmältä studioalbumilta, ”Colors Of Jealousy” (2023), löytyy jopa julkaisematon kappale Runnin' Shoesin kanssa. Täällä kuulee jo paremmin viimeistellyn tuotannon, se kuulostaa kokonaisuutena rikkaammalta ja tsekatummalta. Mutta hyvä on tämä sielukas, swamp balladi myös. Kovempaa on Dontcha Know, jossa Delta blues sulautuu New Orleansin grooveen. Se muistuttaa minua vahvasti Sonny Landrethin kaltaisista ihmisistä, eikä vain slide-kitaran takia. Joka tapauksessa se käryää yhtä hyvin kuin Cajun BBQ. Seuraavat kolme kappaletta ovat ”Three Times Seven Is...” -sessioista (2002) ja siten albumin vanhimmat. Aloitetaan funky Bed Time Bomberilla, joka on paikoin myös varsin jazzahtava. The Silver Moon on rytmikkäämpi ja siten jälleen New Orleans -henkinen, sopivaa materiaalia illanviettoon, olipa kyseessä sitten variantti tai baari. Vauhdikas Boogie Keep In Mind tarjoaa myös runsaasti vauhtia, jälleen Micken bluesharpun vauhdittamana. The Spooky Ride on nopeatempoinen instrumentaali, jossa kitaristi Leppänen käy hienoja kaksintaisteluja Micken huuliharpun ja ksylofonin (?) kanssa. Se on hieman tavanomaisesta poikkeava, mutta viihdyttää silti upeasti ja takaa, että tämän levyn lisää mielellään MICKE BJORKLOF & BLUE STRIPin muiden julkaisujen joukkoon. Ja tietysti laittaa sen useammin soimaan. Toinen edellä mainittu albumi julkaistaan Micken sivuprojektin MICKE & LEFTY feat. Chef alla. Tästä lisää lähiaikoina. Siihen asti, pitäkää hauskaa tämän levyn kanssa.

ENGLISH translation It will soon be 35 years since MICKE BJORKLOF & BLUE STRIP were founded in the early 1990s and, alongside founding father and namesake Micke Bjorklof, bassist Seppo Nuolikoski is still with the band. That would be reason enough to celebrate, but then there's the fact that Micke is celebrating his 60th birthday and so - generous as Finns are - he's giving us two albums. With “Outtakes”, he first serves us a recycling of leftovers and, as we all know, that often tastes particularly good. As more songs were usually recorded for the band's studio albums than ended up on the discs, there are nine songs here that come from five different album sessions. “Rejects” is really the wrong word here, because they simply didn't fit in stylistically or for other reasons. To make this album coherent, they have dispensed with chronology and have not sorted the tracks by year, but in such a way that it simply sounds good. But it always does with this band. And so we start right away with a “La Grange”-style boogie called On Vacation, which comes from the “Ain't Bad Yet” sessions (2018) and bounces along really nicely. There's a real vacation vibe when these guys pass the (solo) balls to each other and groove away. Heal You takes us back a few years to the 2013 album “After The Flood” and this swamp blues benefits above all from Micke's excellent blues harp. It's really great when he fires up his harmonica. Not to mention the fact that the number is a real earworm. Way To Go is no less catchy, with its country touch and the driving slide salvos of guitarist Lefty Leppänen. And that without blowing up the sound, but simply through the playing skills of these guys. Yes, even here you wonder why these songs didn't make it onto the album. In fact, there is even an unreleased track from the last studio album to date, “Colors Of Jealousy” (2023), with Runnin' Shoes. You can already hear the more elaborate production here, it sounds richer and more checked out overall. But this soulful, swamp ballad is also good. It gets rougher with Dontcha Know, in which the Delta blues merges with the New Orleans groove. It reminds me strongly of people like Sonny Landreth, and not just because of the slide guitar. In any case, it sizzles as well as a Cajun BBQ. The next three tracks are from the “Three Times Seven Is...” sessions (2002) and therefore the oldest on this album. We start with the funky Bed Time Bomber, which is also quite jazzy in places. The Silver Moon is more rhythmic and thus again New Orleans-inspired, the right material for the evening, whether on the variant or in the bar. The lively Boogie Keep In Mind also provides plenty of momentum, again pushed by Mickes Blues Harp. The Spooky Ride is a fast-paced instrumental in which guitarist Leppänen engages in wonderful duels with Micke's harmonica and a xylophone (?). It's a little out of the ordinary, but still entertains magnificently and ensures that you'll be happy to add this album to the other releases by MICKE BJORKLOF & BLUE STRIP. And, of course, put it on more often. The second album mentioned above will be released under Micke's side project MICKE & LEFTY feat. boss. More on this shortly.
