SUOMI Jos yritettäisiin aloittaa eräänlainen arvausleikki suomalaisista musiikki-, kulttuuri- ja urheiluhenkilöistä, kollektiivinen muisti ei varmaankaan olisi niin valmis vastaamaan. Tarkkasilmäisimmät elokuvaharrastajat sanoisivat (ainakin omasta mielestäni suurenmoisen) ohjaajan, Aki Kaurismäenn. Vanhemmat moottoripyöräfanit sanoisivat Jarno Saarisen (joka kuoli onnettomuudessa vuoden 1973 Grand Prix of Nations -kilpailussa Monzassa, jossa myös Renzo Pasolini oli traagisesti osallisena). Sitten he sanoisivat ilman erityistä järjestystä: aurinko keskiyöllä, missä joulupukin talo on, porot, napapiiri, paljon lunta kaikkialla, pakkanen talvella. Suomi ylpeilee myös kirjailijoilla, runoilijoilla, arkkitehdeillä, suunnittelijoilla, jotka ovat useimmiten meille lähes tuntemattomia. Entä musiikkielämä? Tuossa Euroopan pohjoisrajalla sijaitsevassa maassa on aina ollut aktiivinen ja monipuolinen musiikkielämä, joka ulottuu klassisesta musiikista 1800-luvulta lähtien alkuperäiseen kansanmusiikkiin, rockiin eri kokoonpanoissaan, jazziin ja bluesiin. Erityisesti tämä viimeisenä mainittu, josta Micke Bjorklof on muodostanut identiteettinsä, kiitos tyylillisen johdonmukaisuuden, hänestä on tulossa yksi tärkeimmistä tyylilajin puolestapuhujista ei vain Suomessa, mutta laajemmin Euroopassa ja paljon muuallakin maailmassa, blues-festivaaleilla ja klubeilla. Hän aloitti rumpalina, mutta on myös monitaitoinen: laulaja, huuliharpunsoittaja, kitaristi, lauluntekijä, tuottaja ja perusti Hokaheyn Records! Levy-yhtiön vuonna 2010, jolla hän on julkaissut kaikki levynsä siitä lähtien. Oman levy-yhtiön omistaminen ei pakota sopimuksellisiin jänteisiin ja sidoksiin, ja siksi hänellä on täysi hallinta kaikesta levymateriaaliin liittyvästä. Ja niin suomalainen muusikko on tehnyt julkaistessaan nämä kaksi levyä. Ei ole yllätys että ensimmäinen kantaa nimeä Outtakes, sillä se koostuu yhdeksästä kappaleesta, joista ei ole eri syistä johtuen tullut julkaistu virallisesti aikaisemmin. Poistetaan heti alkuun kaikki epäilykset, alunperin ne eivät olleet pelkkiä demoja tai keskeneräisiä kappaleita, sillä ne oli jo tehty ja viimeistelty ja sävelletty eri aikoina vuosina 2002-2022. Näin yhteen koottuna ne vahvistavat Micke Bjorklof & Blue Stripin tyylillistä kehitystä. Levyn avaa kiihkeä blues, On Vacation, kun taas Way To Go, on merkittävä askel, Bjorklof laulun lisäksi soittaa huuliharppua, jota säestää hieno slide-soundi ja naislaulu, jota kuullaan jälleen Runnin' Shoes kappaleessa. Outtakes on levy, jossa ote ei herpaannu, kiitos mustan musiikin vaikutteiden jatkuvan vilkkaan tulemisen ja menemisen, kuten funky Bedtime Bomberin, New Orleansin synkopoidun rytmin Silver Moonin ja vetävän blues-jazz Spooky Riden. Jos siis Outtakes on tyylillisesti koostettu levy, toinen Live On Air on suoraviivainen läpileikkaus mississippiläisestä bluesista. Micke & Lefty featuring Chef on Blue Stripin sivuprojekti. Pohjoiseurooppalainen elektro-akustinen trio, jonka downhome bluesin piirteet istuisivat hyvin juke joint tyyppisen baarin menoon ja saisi mustan amerikkalaisyleisön tanssimaan ja viihdyttämään. Live On Air on tuplalevy, jossa on kaksi esitystä, joita jokainen blues-fani varmasti arvostaa, mutta ei vain, räikeän suoraselkäisyytensä ja musiikillisen tyylin hallinnan vuoksi. Vol.1, kaksitoista kappaletta, nauhoitettiin BoomRoom Studiossa DLF Radion On Stage -ohjelmaa varten vuonna 2020, mainitsemme: nimmarit, Mississippi, Up The Wall, Good Friend, ja coverit, Tell That Woman (Willie Dixon), Big Bill Blues (Big Bill Broonzy) Polk Salad Annie (Tony Joe White). Vol.2 on koko konsertti Blues Baltica -festivaalilla Saksassa vuonna 2023. Kolmetoista kappaletta, mainitsemme: coverit, California Blues (Jimmie Rodgers), Sail On (Sam Lightnin Hopkins) nimmarit Someday, You Better Me, Do The Right Thing. Näistä kahdesta levyjulkaisusta Micke Bjorklof sanoi, että blues on aina ollut perustani, mutta olen vuosien varrella tutkinut sen monia vivahteita. Outtakesin ja Live On Airin myötä haluan juhlistaa musiikillisen matkani sekä sähköistä että akustista puolta. En voisi keksi parempaa tapaa juhlistaa 60-vuotissyntymäpäivääni kuin jakaa nämä kaksi hyvin erityistä albumia fanien kanssa. Ajattelimme, että nämä kaksi albumia voisivat olla myös ”kaksi kirkkainta kynttilää” synttärisankarin kakussa!

EN If one were to try to start a sort of guessing game about Finnish music, culture and sports personalities, the collective memory would probably not be so ready in the answer. The most attentive film fans would say (the great, at least for yours truly) director, Aki Kaurismaki. For older motorcycle fans they would say Jarno Saarinen (who died in an accident during the 1973 Grand Prix of Nations at Monza, where Renzo Pasolini was also tragically involved). Then they would go in no particular order: the sun at midnight, where Santa's house is, reindeer, the Arctic Circle, lots of snow everywhere, freezing temperatures in winter. Finland also boasts of writers, poets, architects, designers, mostly almost unknown to us. And what about the music scene? In that country positioned up there on the northern borders of Europe, there has always been an active diverse music scene, from classical music since the 19th Century , to native folk, to rock in its various arrangements, to jazz and blues. It is especially with this last step, that, Micke Bjorklof, has formed his identity, becoming, thanks to a stylistic consistency, one of the main spokesmen not only for the Finnish scene, but expanded in Europe and much of the rest of the world, playing at blues festivals and clubs. He was began as a drummer but later acquired multipurpose skills: singer, harmonica player, guitarist, songwriter, producer, and founder of Hokahey! Records in 2010, with which he has released all his records from 2010 onward. Having one's own label does not force contractual strings and ties, and one therefore has total management of everything related to the record material. And that is what the Finnish musician has done in releasing these two records. The first one he not surprisingly titled Outtakes, because it consists of nine pieces that, for a variety of reasons, have not (until now) become official. Let us remove any doubts right away, originally they were not auditions or unfinished pieces, because they were already done and finished and composed at different times from 2002 to 2022. Gathered now here they go to fortify the stylistic intentions of Micke Bjorklof & Blue Strip. The disc opens with a pressing blues, On Vacation, while Way To Go, is a remarkable step, Bjorklof in addition to vocals plays harmonica, accompanied by a great slide sound and female vocals which are heard again in the compiles Runnin' Shoes. Outtakes is not a record where one gets distracted, thanks to the continuous lively comings and goings of black music imprints, as with the funky Bedtime Bomber, the syncopated rhythm of New Orleans, Silver Moon, and the dragging blues-jazz Spooky Ride. If, therefore, Outtakes is a stylistically composite record, the second Live On Air is a straightforward cross-section of Mississippi-esque blues. Micke & Lefty featuring Chef is a side project to Blue Strip. A northern European electro-acoustic trio with downhome blues characteristics that would not disfigure in some juke joint to get a black American audience dancing and entertained. Live On Air is a double with two performances, which we are sure will be appreciated by every blues fan, but not only, for blatant candor and mastery of the subject matter. Vol.1, twelve tracks, was recorded At BoomRoom Studio for DLF Radio's On Stage program in 2020, we mention: the originals, Mississippi, Up The Wall, Good Friend, and covers, Tell That Woman (Willie Dixon), Big Bill Blues (Big Bill Broonzy) Polk Salad Annie (Tony Joe White). Vol.2 is the entire concert at the Blues Baltica Festival in Germany in 2023. Thirteen tracks, we mention: covers, California Blues (Jimmie Rodgers), Sail On (Sam Lightnin Hopkins) the originals Someday, You Better Me, Do The Right Thing. About these two record releases, Micke Bjorklof said, blues has always been my foundation, but I have explored its many nuances over the years. With Outtakes and Live On Air, I want to celebrate both the electric and acoustic sides of my musical journey. I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate my 60th birthday than to share these two very special albums with our fans. We thought the two albums could also be “the two brightest candles” on the birthday boy's cake!

ENG A journey in consistent blues rock Just over a year ago, Micke Bjorklof & Blue Strip released the album Colors Of Jealousy to more than a passing grade here in our magazine. With the same attitude of a modern blues expression with elements of classic rock, soul and blues rock as our Swedish friends Lisa Lystam Family Band, the Finnish band from their headquarters in Kauhava was a pleasant new acquaintance. Some may recall the duo Micke & Lefty feat Chef mixing old-fashioned acoustic country blues with americana, jazz, bluegrass and a dash of rock n' roll on their record releases over 10 years ago and up to the present day. This is the same “power trio”. The band has played extensively across Europe, and had their final breakthrough with the album “Let The Fire Lead” in 2020. Having opened their sound towards a bigger and quite fat blues rock band with a wide angle on the format of their previous album, this album entitled Outtakes is exactly that, the songs they have recorded that did not fit in previously. After an album of sizzling blues rock in songs like “Highway highway” (ala Lisa Lystam Family Band), to doomy dark man blues ala Ledfoot in “Feel it in my bones”, and Ennio Morricone inspired spaghetti blues on “Colors of jealousy” last time, this album is more of a journey in consistent blues rock with good songs that definitely deserved the chance to be heard. Recorded in 2002-22, these surplus songs are slightly better than the previous album, I think. English producer John Porter, known behind productions for Tommy Castro, Ana Popovic, Keb Mo, Otis Rush and R.L. Burnside, to name but a few, has produced two of the really good things here in 2014 with the songs “On vacation” and “Way to go”. “Heal you” and ‘Dontcha know’ recorded 2 years earlier with Mark Bingham (R.E.M.) as producer in New Orleans are also worth mentioning. I'm not as enthusiastic about the later 2002 recordings that close the album, it's a bit of a mixed bag, but Micke Bjorklof & Blue Strip are on the supply side with this surplus stock of an album, and have so much good stuff that you shouldn't close the borders to Finland. Micke Bjorklof himself sings, plays harmonica and electric guitar with a lot of soul, and when his friend Lefty Leppanen also plays electric guitar, mandolin and slide, there's a guitar-heavy sound inside this broad Finnish blues rock that we can tolerate and most of us like to wrestle with. Like the Lisa Lystam Family Band, they really live for the blues and their music. The fact that the music is taken into a modern soundscape and a rocking sound - well, you just have to give a thumbs up for that.

SUOMI Johdonmukainen matka bluesrockin parissa Reilu vuosi sitten Micke Bjorklof & Blue Strip julkaisi Colors Of Jealousy -albumin, joka sai täällä lehdessämme hyvän arvosanan. Samalla asenteella modernia blues-ilmaisua klassisen rockin, soulin ja bluesrockin elementeillä kuin ruotsalaiset ystävämme Lisa Lystam Family Band, suomalaisyhtye kotipaikkakunnaltaan Kauhavalta oli miellyttävä uusi tuttavuus. Jotkut saattavat muistaa duo Micke & Lefty feat Chef, joka sekoittaa vanhanaikaista akustista countrybluesia americanaan, jazziin, bluegrassiin ja ripaus rock n' rollia yli 10 vuoden takaisilla levyjulkaisuillaan aina tähän päivään asti. Tämä on sama ”voimatrio”. Yhtye on keikkaillut laajalti ympäri Eurooppaa ja tehnyt lopullisen läpimurtonsa ”Let The Fire Lead” -albumilla vuonna 2020. Avatessaan soundiaan kohti isompaa ja varsin lihavaa blues rock -yhtyettä, jonka formaatti on edellisen albuminsa laajakulmainen, tämä Outtakes-niminen albumi on juuri sitä, heidän levyttämiään kappaleita, jotka eivät aiemmin sopineet. Kun albumi oli edellisellä kerralla ollut huikaisevaa bluesrockia kappaleissa kuten ”Highway highway” (ala Lisa Lystam Family Band), doomista dark man bluesia ala Ledfoot kappaleessa ”Feel it in my bones” ja Ennio Morricone -vaikutteista spagetti-bluesia ”Colors of jealousy” -kappaleessa, tämä albumi on enemmänkin matka johdonmukaisen bluesrockin pariin hyvillä kappaleilla, jotka ehdottomasti ansaitsivat tulla kuulluiksi. Englantilainen tuottaja John Porter, joka tunnetaan muun muassa Tommy Castron, Ana Popovicin, Keb Mo:n, Otis Rushin ja R.L. Burnsiden tuotantojen takana, on tuottanut kaksi todella hyvää kappaletta vuonna 2014 kappaleilla ”On vacation” ja ”Way to go”. Mainitsemisen arvoisia ovat myös kaksi vuotta aiemmin New Orleansissa Mark Binghamin (R.E.M.) kanssa tuottajana levytetyt ”Heal you” ja ”Dontcha know”. Levyn päättävistä myöhemmistä vuoden 2002 nauhoituksista en ole yhtä innostunut, se on vähän sekalainen kokonaisuus, mutta Micke Bjorklof & Blue Strip ovat tällä levyn ylijäämävarastolla tarjontapuolella, ja heillä on niin paljon hyvää kamaa, että ei kannata sulkea rajoja Suomeen. Micke Bjorklof itse laulaa, soittaa huuliharppua ja sähkökitaraa sielukkaasti, ja kun hänen ystävänsä Lefty Leppanen soittaa myös sähkökitaraa, mandoliinia ja slidea, on tämän laajan suomalaisen bluesrockin sisällä kitarapainotteinen soundi, jota voi sietää ja jonka kanssa suurin osa meistä tykkää painia. Lisa Lystam Family Bandin tavoin he todella elävät bluesille ja musiikilleen. Se, että musiikki on viety moderniin äänimaailmaan ja rokkaavaan soundiin - no, sille on vain pakko antaa peukku ylös.
